Nursing Home Neglect: Pressure Sores - Bedsores, Decubitus Ulcers

Bedsores are a major health concern in care facilities. They carry serious risk and health concerns. Also known as pressure sores or decubitus ulcers, they generally occur to people who are not ambulatory. There are four stages to bedsores:

  1. The skin turns reddish; and feels spongy and/or warm
  2. The area opens and looks like a blister or cut
  3. The wound is below the tissue beneath the skin; similar look to a crater
  4. Significant damage to the skin, muscle and bones is apparent

How are they caused?

Bedsores are formed due to continuous pressure. The pressure restricts, or cuts off circulation, to the area of the body with the pressure. This causes the underlying tissue to breakdown. Areas most susceptible to bedsores are those in which bones have little protection from fat and muscle. Frequently, the hipbone, tailbone, shoulder blade and heel are affected.

Why does this occur?

Confinement to a bed or wheelchair for an extended period of time puts a person at high risk. Proper care, attention and concern are paramount. If not properly treated bedsores will get worse. People who are incontinent are at even greater risk as skin breaks down more easily when it is constantly moist. Diabetes, circulation problems, dehydration and malnutrition are all risk factors associated with pressure ulcers.

What should have been done?

Bedsores are easily preventable. Caretakers should turn or reposition patients every two to three hours. Proper staffing and following procedure are required. This is perhaps the most recurring cause of pressure sores. If not treated they will spread quickly; they will become infected with serious consequences.
